For decades, Operational Technology (OT) did not need to worry about the cloud. In fact, it did not even need to worry about the internet.
While IT evolved in an increasingly connected world, OT remained focused on its original mission: keeping physical processes running safely, reliably, and continuously.
Controllers, supervisory systems, sensors, and industrial equipment were designed to operate in isolated environments. At the time, availability was the priority. Cybersecurity simply was not.
But the landscape has changed. The pursuit of greater operational efficiency, remote monitoring, and data analytics has brought together two worlds that remained separate for a long time. Information that once stayed inside the plant now feeds cloud-based dashboards. Vendors remotely access equipment. Corporate systems consume operational data in real time.
This increase in connectivity has also expanded the reliance on remote access. According to the <a href="https://www.sans.org/white-papers/state-of-ics-ot-security-2025">SANS State of ICS/OT Security 2025</a> report, half of all OT incidents recorded in 2025 originated from unauthorized external access, often associated with third-party remote maintenance activities.
Despite this, fewer than 13% of organizations report having advanced controls to manage remote access, and one in three organizations does not even maintain a centralized inventory of active remote access points.
As a result, many industrial environments have become connected to corporate networks and cloud services even though their original architecture was never designed for that level of connectivity.
This transformation is now part of everyday reality across industrial organizations. What was once limited to isolated initiatives has become increasingly common as companies seek greater visibility, integration, and operational efficiency.
The challenge is that connectivity does not eliminate the characteristics of industrial environments. It simply exposes them to a different context.
<h2>When legacy assets challenge OT security</h2>
Unlike corporate environments, where technology refresh cycles are relatively frequent, industrial operations work with much longer time horizons. It is common to find equipment that has been operating reliably for decades, controlling critical processes with the same consistency it had when first installed.
From an operational perspective, this makes perfect sense. A machine that continues to perform safely and reliably is unlikely to be replaced simply because a newer technology has become available.
The challenge is that many of these assets were built long before concepts such as strong authentication, encrypted communications, and continuous monitoring became standard cybersecurity practices. Some still rely on protocols originally designed for closed networks without native security mechanisms. Others depend on operating systems that have long been considered obsolete in corporate IT environments.
This does not mean they are broken or unsuitable for their purpose. It simply means they were built for a different world.
Once these assets begin exchanging information with external systems, cloud platforms, or corporate networks, new risks emerge that must be understood and managed. At that point, the conversation is no longer just about technology.
<h2>Why OT incidents have different consequences</h2>
In traditional corporate environments, cybersecurity incidents are typically associated with data loss or system outages. In OT, however, the consequences can directly affect the physical world.
A disruption may lead to production downtime, reduced operational capacity, damage to critical equipment, and even risks to human safety. These impacts go far beyond the digital environment and directly affect business continuity.
According to the <a href="https://www.sans.org/white-papers/state-of-ics-ot-security-2025">SANS State of ICS/OT Security 2025</a> report, more than 20% of organizations experienced cybersecurity incidents affecting OT environments over the past year. Approximately 40% of those incidents resulted in operational disruptions, while a significant number required weeks — or even months — for full recovery.
It is not difficult to understand why industrial environments are such attractive targets for attackers. Unlike many corporate systems, disruptions in OT directly impact production, making downtime a risk that organizations can rarely tolerate for extended periods.
The numbers reinforce this reality. According to the <a href="https://www.ibm.com/think/x-force/x-force-threat-intelligence-index-2025-attackers-steal-sell-user-identities">IBM X-Force Threat Intelligence Index 2025</a>, 70% of the incidents handled by IBM&#8217;s X-Force team last year involved organizations operating within critical infrastructure sectors. In more than one quarter of those cases, attackers gained access by exploiting known vulnerabilities.
The report also found that manufacturing remained the most targeted industry, accounting for 26% of observed incidents. The sector&#8217;s low tolerance for production downtime continues to make it one of the most attractive targets for cybercriminals.
<h2>Connectivity requires mature OT security</h2>
The good news is that the solution is not to eliminate connectivity. Modern industry depends on it, and the benefits of digital transformation are undeniable.
The challenge is ensuring that digital transformation is matched by the same level of cybersecurity maturity. Connecting industrial systems to cloud platforms, third-party vendors, and corporate networks without a proper security strategy can significantly expand the attack surface and expose critical operations to risks that simply did not exist before.
Understanding which assets are connected to operations, controlling remote access, properly segmenting networks, and understanding communication flows between IT and OT are fundamental steps toward reducing risk without sacrificing productivity.
Industrial organizations will continue moving toward increasingly connected, integrated, and data-driven operations. This evolution is natural and brings significant gains in productivity, efficiency, and competitiveness.
For that reason, cybersecurity must evolve alongside it. It is not enough to connect industrial assets to the cloud, vendors, or corporate systems. Organizations must do so with visibility, control, and a clear understanding of the risks involved.
For decades, isolation helped protect industrial environments. Today, that role must be fulfilled through strategy, governance, and cybersecurity. Because industry will continue becoming more connected — but that does not mean it has to become more vulnerable.
